New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players: The Mikado Phoenix Theatre reviews
Weak phantom!
Last night, the performance failed to even come close to the bar set in Las Vegas. The Phantom is supposed to bring energy and excitement, but this Phantom was lame, not commanding the stage or role. His tone of voice and song were more melodic than manly. There was no testerone in the role played that night; he whined and didn't long for Cristine. Nonetheless, Cristine and Carlotta picked up the slack in the production, making it a female-led performance. I was expecting passion and tears but it didn't happen; there were tons of dry eyes. I did like the special effects and props used; the cast and crew made good use of the limited stage space. The orchestra carried a nice solid tune throughout the performance, although some songs were rushed. I did not approve of the faster version of "All I ask of you." I was feeling the emotion, and apparently, no one was sitting next to me. Overall, this is a performance I would recommend to do in your spare time. I made plans for the event and probably won't recommend that my friends do the same. It probably doesn't help that my first experience of New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players: The Mikado was in Las Vegas. I used that experience as a personal gauge to judge future performances on.
